Canada is located in the North of America. Canada excist of big city's such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. With 9.984.670 km2 is Canada the 2nd biggest country of the world. Horses can fly into Canada, horses get imported at airports such as Toronto and Calgary.
Compared to the USA, horses which get exported to Canada first need a pre-isolation period in Holland. This period is approx. 10 days. During this quarantine period, the VET collects blood and sends these swabs and tubes with blood to the national lab in Holland. Two cities in Canada can receive horses; Toronto and Calgary. Upon arrival, horses need to go into quarantine again. This can be done at the new owner’s place. The quarantine will take approx. 7 days.
Horses need to be tested prior to Export and upon arrival on the following tests:
Piroplasmosis C Elisa & CFT test
Infectious Anemia
Dourine
Glanders
Mares and stallions need to be tested on CEM as well.
Health certificates are always issued by the Ministry of Agriculture of the exporting country. In Holland it is named as NVWA (Nederlandse Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit). The health certificate for horses which need to fly into Canada are issued after quarantine period.
